Portfolio: Bedouin Soundclash

Today in media we looked at starting to work towards are ancillary task, we got give a pack with was full of pictures and information on a band call Bedouin soundclash we had to guess what type of music they may be, this band include one white guy and two black guy are first thought were that they are going to be a rap, R&B type group because of the stereotype black guys rappers
we then mind mapped information about the band to give us a better idea of what type of album artwork work they would have and how they may be soon in the music videos.

working together and after listening to one of there songs we came up with a album cover which included the Canadian flag as the background and then the band in front, furthermore doing this helped us to start thinking of ideas that we could use in our ancillary task.

Research and Planning: Role of a label company

Record labels have also been a big part to a artist doing well, but over time this is starting to change with artist putting there own stuff out there through social media and web 2.0 and making a fan base without having a record company behind them.

Major labels 1988–1998 (Big Six)

  1. Warner Music Group
  2. EMI
  3. Sony Music (known as CBS Records until January 1991 then known as Sony Music thereafter)
  4. BMG Music
  5. Universal Music Group
  6. Polygram
Major labels since 2012 (Big Three)
  1. Universal Music Group (EMI recorded music division absorbed into UMG)
  2. Sony Music Entertainment (EMI Music Publishing absorbed into Sony/ATV Music Publishing)
  3. Warner Music Group
To help with the research into music recording label i looked at a article from the guardian  "behind the music: What do record labels actually do? you'd be surprised" it talks about how ed sheeran was able to make it to number 2 on the itunes charts with out having a record label but yet he still signed up to the company Asylum/Atlantic, part of the Warner Music group. The article goes on to statue how he was able to get himself out there but needed help with finance which is where the record label came in, also to try and achieve a bigger fan base and get him music to more people. Other ways of getting out there with shows like pop idol, Britain's got talents and the main one X factor giving the chance for artist to get there music out there and a record deal it helps to find fresh and new artist that may of not been found in the past. With the big success of Leona Lewis and One direction.

But are record label a good thing? this on of the big questions when it comes to the industry they band someone right and they get number one hits, get it wrong and the public slated it. A example of how a record label can change Artist take P!nk for example a small rebel that no one had hear of first album release gets notice but not fully then on her next album she tell them how the album with sound and be marketed making her second album singing about things that have happened to her past events making her career massive because she told the business how it was going to be in a sense. In conclusion i think record labels are not going to disappear but it is just easier in this day and age to get yourself out there with out having to have a label but it will only get you so far before you will need help from a label to get a bigger fan base.

Research and Planning: choosen song

As a group we picked are genre to be mental as we think the cons and convention will be easy to recreate with in are piece, plus we all listen to that genre of music so have watched many music videos in the past to this genre but we are part of the audience that pays so you know what to use with in are music video. The artist that we are using are called ' Ravenface' and the song which we have picked is 'This Is Annihilation' because they haven't produced a music video for this so it give use the chance to brand them with this video instead of it looking like a copy of the one which is out there.

Research and Planning: Actors

For our actors we looked for males that where already with in the stereotype of a metal with long hair, wear band tops, skinny jeans and converse, lucky one of the members in are group is friends with four guys that all play instrument and fix into the idea we were looking for so it was prefect furthermore we choose to just have four actors as Ravenface started as a group of four.

Research and Planning: Marketing Ravenface

As ravenface are a new metal band they needed to make sure that they getting there marketing right to be about to reach out to the audience of the genre that they fall in to so for we have found out that they do this through social media/ web 2.0, by posting about gigs there are playing on facebbook, myspace ect, they have branded themselves well with there clothing as you can tell straight away what genre they our by linking them to bands like bring me the horizon. raven face has given themselves a logo which is clear when it comes to seeing gig posters.

Ravenface have also don magazine interviews and youtube interview. one of the main marketing tool they have uses is with there mechanise by putting there album covers on there t-shirt, to help promote the albums, therefore when we come to doing are ancillary task, we well need to take all these things into account.

Research and Planning:Marketing & Branding

Marketing and branding is a big deal when it comes to the music industry because it is how the band/artist is portrayed to their fans, In business, a branded image is your logo, tagline, colours, fonts/typesets and other attributes that visually represent one’s company. In music, the same is true: Every band should have at least a band logo to instantly gain recognition. for example Nirvana have there logo with is then branded of to mech, with the logo being simple but audience of the genre no straight away who it is. Marketing also effects the way in which a music video is made and how the artist is show a good example of the is Ed Sheeran his record company believed that if the audience saw what he looked like that there may judge and therefore record sells not being every high this is why in his first two music videos we only see him for a couple of seconds and isn't the main focus point. to help us develop are idea of how to brand and rebrand we were given the task to try and rebrand a Jaffa cake and it ended up being hared then we first thought, this was to help us be able to market are chosen artist when is came to the ancillary task because they are already out there we need to think of branding them to link to there genre but not copy the ideas with are already out there.

Research and Planning: Locations

Because we now have a clear idea for are Narrative and setting for are performance based section of the music video we decided to go out location shooting to get ideas of different place in which we can film our video.
The woodland is are idea for where the Narrative can be set and then the image of the abandon college gave us the idea for where we could set up the performance base but also continue with the narrative with in the building, so mixing the outside world with the inside.

Research and Planning: Mind Map

After getting an email back from Ravenface we started mind mapping. These are some of the ideas we have to go in to our music video. we started pulling all our ideas together in a mind map, giving us the convention of a music video that we may use in our video. we have come up with the narrative  of the unknown thing (zombies) and also looked at intertextuality

Research and Planning: Chosen Artist & Comfirmation

Raven face is the band which we have choosen to creat a music video for they are a metalcore group from blackpool that formed in 2008. we picked this band as we believed they had the heavy sound that we are going for, we have choosen a song off there first ablum released in 2010 This Is Annihilation, the song has the same name as the ablum which we are going to make the video for. we came up with the ideas of cons and convension of a metal music video. which include:

To Insure we could use this band we messaged them asking for permission.

Kaya Brenna Parsons.
Hi Raven-face. i am a current media student and for our A2 coursework we have to make a music video. It would be amazing if you would allow my group and i to use one of your songs. We are not sure which song to use yet but if you agree we would keep you updated. Thanks very much and have a good weekend.
RAVEN-FACE - Official Band Page
 Yeah of course, no problem.

we then start thinking of things that we need to include with in this video:
  • strobe light
  • performance based
  • small narrative
  • band wearing t-shirt of similar bands
  • dark lighting and settings
  • close up shoots (faces and instruments)
